Sewing Project - Calbayog City, Philippines
Helping people to help themselves has been one of Omega’s goals, especially in the locations where we operate children’s homes. Teaching mothers to cook healthy meals for their families and giving them instructions in basic health care has helped many families to overcome their most immediate needs. However, we did not want them to become dependent on our continued help, and our ‘supplemental feeding program’ has been very successful in providing temporary help. The next step would be to help them overcome their poverty by training them to earn a living and become self-reliant.
This spring, we will start sewing classes for women in Calbayog. The husband of our project manager, a tailor by trade, has offered to teach the classes. The plan is to have a training program where the women are taught pattern design as well as cutting, sewing and selling techniques. Omega will provide materials. When a lady successfully completes the course, she will be given the opportunity to buy the machine she learned on, making monthly payments as she can, until it is paid off. This enables her to immediately begin a business and use her newly obtained training and skills to support herself and her family. At this time, we have three sewing machines, but several more are needed. In addition, supplies like fabrics and yarn are needed, and I want to present this need to you, the readers of our newsletter. If you are able to donate a new or used sewing machine or fabrics, we would be very grateful for your help in this new venture. We hope to turn this into a continuing project.
